The workforce participation rate in the dental industry is at an all-time low. The days of simply going onto a job board and quickly finding and hiring a candidate are gone.
Dental hygienists are inundated with offers, and candidates frequently ghost dental offices for work interviews. Even so, dental offices can still use tools and strategies to overcome these challenges and turn them into a competitive advantage.
Trey Tepichin is the CEO and Co-Founder of Cloud Dentistry, a web and app-based marketplace that lets dental offices message and book dental staff on demand.
In Trey's view, there are three key factors behind the staffing crisis the dental industry is experiencing right now, the most significant being demographics.
First off, around 98% of hygienists and dental assistants are women. You're probably aware by now that the workforce participation rate for women is at a staggering 33-year all-time low. So, you don't even need to do the math to realize how this affects staffing availability.
The second factor is healthcare, which took a big hit during COVID. After the pandemic, one in five healthcare workers quit the profession permanently.
And finally, the digital age exacerbated an already existing trend in dentistry: part-time and temporary work. About 35% of workers aged 40 and more are part-time or temporary; for the 18 to 38-year-old cohort, the number is close to 60%.
When you put all of these factors together, it starts to make sense why it's so difficult to find a fully-staffed dental office these days. Fortunately, there are still some strategies you can adopt to hire and retain high-quality teams in 2023, and we talk all about it in this week's episode of 'The Raving Patients Podcast!'.
Trey joins me to discuss the staffing shortage crisis in dentistry: why it's so hard to find staff, how to avoid ghosting on interviews, and some strategies to retain staff. Tune in to learn more!
We also discuss how Cloud Dentistry is helping dentists meet their staffing needs, how the platform works, and how you can get started.
