As the dental industry evolves, new challenges arise, and only the best-prepared dental professionals will be able to tackle them. However, it seems that recent graduates are struggling to do so. Is there a way to better prepare dentists entering the space for these new challenges?

Dr. Amrita R. Patel is a general dentist in private practice with her father, endodontist Dr. Rohit Z. Patel, in Westchester County, New York. She is the director of Member Benefits for the American Association of Women Dentists and is on the NYU College of Dentistry Alumni Association board. 

Dr. Amrita argues that many newer dental graduates don't have a 'grip on reality.' In other words, they don't know what life is like after dental school, which is concerning.

Moreover, dental schools seldom prepare new dentists to learn the business aspect of dentistry, which makes it harder for them to run and grow a successful dental practice. 

This is why Dr. Amrita believes that to thrive as a new dentist in 2023, it's essential to find a mentor with goals and dreams that line up with theirs, someone they can bounce ideas off of and get advice from.
