It's not a secret that hygiene departments can be incredibly profitable. However, many practices struggle to make their hygiene department profitable with the current labor market, inflation, and insurance reimbursement rates. Fortunately, there are some strategies you can implement to drive hygiene production and quickly generate more revenue!
Wendy Briggs is the Founder of Hygiene Diamonds, an International hygiene growth strategy organization. She is a preeminent leader in dentistry's hygiene space, and dental professionals worldwide rave about her effectiveness in providing systems for real-world solutions.
Wendy believes that besides the current shortage of hygienists, one of the main reasons dental practices struggle to profit from their hygiene department is the idea that more appointments mean more profit.
Even industry experts claim that to grow your practice, the only strategy you can employ is to reduce appointment times. In theory, it makes sense; after all, dentistry is the business of flow. However, it doesn't work well.
When a dental practice chooses to shorten the appointments to have more flow through, the standard and consistency of care suffer significantly.
Instead, Wendy's approach focuses on optimizing the production per visit without shortening the appointment time. In her experience, most hygienists want to be productive and serve patients at a higher level. However, they don't necessarily have clarity on how to do that.
That fact sheds some light on another tactical error common in dentistry. We've taken producers and providers, and when we compensate them at an hourly wage, we end up with an hourly mindset, an hourly-focused employee.
But that isn't the right approach if we're focused on providing the best care possible for patients. You need to ditch that hourly mindset, give power back to the hygienist and give them the ability to do different things in the practice.
